If you live in a state where weed is welcome, you have probably seen the culinary art that is taking place in most dispensaries right now. It’s not only about pre-rolled blunts anymore – (although these are amazing as well) it’s about cooking, baking, and showing off your THC skills like you were aiming for a Michelin star.
If you don’t have a dispensary close, you can order online, or attempt to cook something up yourself. But how? Of course, some dispensaries sell ingredients like cannabutter or THC infused oils that you can include in your recipes.
Nevertheless – let’s go through the basics! When you understand how this magic works, you’ll be able to expand your repertoire and cook with more confidence.
The Basics
Start from Decarboxylation
It’s the first step when it comes to cooking with weed. Decarboxylation removes the COOH group from the THC-A molecule by releasing H2O and CO2 and turns it into the psychoactive THC.
In human terms: when you smoke pot, you burn cannabis, which activates THC and makes you high. When cooking, you should activate the psychoactive substance by heating it, not burning it. That’s a time-consuming but very effective process. Here you can find the beginner’s guide of decarboxylation.
The crucial things for cooking with potent cannabis are Cannaoil or Cannabutter. Both of these ingredients are the base for your weed edible dishes. Visit CannabutterDigest.com to know more about cannabutter.
Why? Because THC is soluble in fat. This is why oils, butter, lards and other oily bases will be necessary to unlock the true potential of your recipe. Lucky for you, it’s insanely easy to make them. Let’s start with the oil.
Cannaoil
Cannaoil can be easily served with both sweet and salty food. Depending on the recipe, you can combine it with garlic and serve canna-garlic infused steak or put some sugar and bake delicious crispy chocolate cookies. Here is how to make it.
- Mix an ounce of the ground flower with 2 cups of oil – coconut oil works the best.
- Put it into a jar and heat for around 6 hours without boiling it.
- A water bath works the best for it, pay attention to the amount of water, don’t let your cannabis burn should it evaporate.
- Strain the oil; you can do it a coffee filter, cheesecloth, or muslin – something that will get rid of all the little bits of flower.
Cannabutter
Cannabutter has basically the same use as the oil, but because of its structure, it’s more often preferred while making sweet weed snacks. Here is how to make it.
- Add one cup of butter and one cup of water into a pot (it prevents from scorching the butter) and simmer it on low. The butter will slowly melt.
- Add cannabis and mix it all together.
- Simmer it for around 2-3 hours and mix it from time to time. Don’t let the liquid boil.
- Strain it slowly into a jar. You can use the same technique I suggested with the cannaoil.
- Put it into the fridge and refrigerate. An hour should be enough to cool down and get the full butter consistency.
Voila, that’s it! Now you have the base to create magical weed edibles.
Weed brownie
Brownie is one of the easiest pastries to make, and the most successfully combined sweet snack with marijuana. A pot brownie is also a bit of a classic of cannabis cuisine.
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup of flour
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1 tsp. Vanilla extract
- Cocoa powder ¾ cup
- Your favorite chocolate melted
- Cannabutter – 120 grams
- ½ tsp salt
Preheat the oven to 320°F. Grease your baking dish with regular butter so your brownie won’t stick to it. Take a bowl and add cannabis butter, salt, sugar, vanilla extract, ¾ melted chocolate, cocoa powder, and eggs and blend it all. Next, put the flour to the bowl and mix it until the smooth constituency. Place it to the baking dish and bake for 25-35 minutes. Put the rest of the melted chocolate on the top and add whatever topping you want. It goes very well with chocolate chips, raspberries, and nuts.
Marijuana french toasts
You’re going to need:
- Any kind of bread you have
- 1,5 tbsp of butter
- 3tbsp of cannabutter
- 2 cups of milk
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp. Cinnamon
- ½ tsp.Salt
- 1 tsp. Sugar
- 1 tsp. Vanilla extract
Start from buttering a baking dish. Spread the butter all over it so the toast won’t stick while baking. Then cut the baguettes into 2-3cm slices. Mix 2 eggs, 2 cups of milk, vanilla extract, a teaspoon of sugar and cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Before soaking the bread in the mixture, spread the cannabutter on both sides. Next, you can dip the toast in the milky dough. Preheat the oven for around 180°C, place the bread on the grill and bake till they are golden brown from both sides (it’s going to take 35-45min).
The bottom line
People love to experiment with edibles. You can find many interesting recipes in cookbooks, the Internet, or Youtube channels. Once you have a base, then you can make any weed-infused dish you want. Enjoy your delicious journey.
