If you were a child in the 1990s, chances are that when you think of pizza, you think of the Teenage Mutant Ninja (or Hero) Turtles. After all, this was the main food that they ate!
Pizza is a classic dish from New York to France, and, despite slight cultural differences, the base recipes have always been similar. A crusty, tasty base, tomato puree, and cheese!
Of course, as fusion cuisine has become more commonplace, the standard foods that you may find on a pizza have also changed. Ergo, if you love pizza, there are now different taste combinations you can try over and above the average ham and pineapple.
So, which pizza combos are taking off in 2023? Read on to find out!
Hot Honey Pizza
No, you didn’t read that wrong! This has become a popular recipe to try at home, so you probably won’t find it on an Arundel pizza menu! However, the idea of putting honey on pizza originated in LA, and now, more people than ever are trying it out.
To be frank, it shouldn’t really be surprising; pizzas are generally ladened with salty meats, and adding something sweet into the mix will help to balance the flavors out. So, most people add a drizzle of honey to their pizza meat before cooking it, as well as drizzling it over the pizza after it has cooked. The creaminess of the cheese (especially goat’s cheese) and the honey is a match made in heaven.
Pickles, or gherkins, are great in burgers and with cheese and meat, as they give a crunchy tang to your food. So, why not put them on pizza?
This trend started in 2018 and has grown in popularity since, with more people asking for sliced pickles to be put on their pizzas. This is, apparently, best served on a garlic base, topped with mozzarella, and dipped into a tangy ranch sauce. So, if you’ve always liked the crunch of a pickle, you may be able to find it in your local city’s pizzeria.
At this point, you may be thinking, what am I reading? Of course, it sounds ludicrous to consider putting potatoes on pizza, but what’s the most common side dish to pizzas? Fries! Also, if you’ve ever had cheesy fries, you’ll know how good it tastes if you mix potato and cheese.
So, the potato pizza involves the basic mozzarella, white cheddar, basil, pesto, and, of course, the potato, which is placed close to the base and thinly sliced. When the slices of potato are crisp, the pizza is ready to eat and is said to be very tasty.
Butternut Squash Pizza
It’s safe to say that most people have eaten butternut squash, but usually in a curry. It’s easy to see why.
This vegetable is hard, chewy and, much like a pumpkin, it needs to be peeled, deseeded, and cut into small chunks before it can be cooked. Of course, once it has been cooked, it’s tender, tasty, and very healthy. You can pre-roast the cubed squash before putting it onto the pizza before cooking, or you can use a blender to make a butternut squash sauce, which you’ll also drizzle over the pizza before cooking.
